VoicedByMe / Use cases / EPUB to audiobook

EPUB · PDF · Word · Markdown · Text

EPUB and PDF to audiobook, with every chapter.

VoicedByMe turns an EPUB, PDF, Word or text file into an audiobook on your own computer. It finds the chapters, reads them in a natural AI voice or your own cloned voice, and saves one M4B file with chapters or a file per chapter. Nothing is uploaded and there are no character limits: $30 once.

How it works

Drop in a book. Get an audiobook.

  1. Open the book

Drag an EPUB, PDF, Word (.docx, .doc), Markdown or text file into VoicedByMe. It shows the chapters it found.

  2. Pick a voice and a format

One of 35 ready-made voices or your own. Then one M4B with chapters for audiobook apps, or an M4A per chapter for any player.

  3. Keep using your computer

The audiobook is made in the background, one book at a time, and lands in your Music folder. Close the app and it carries on next time.

What it handles

Real books, not just clean text.

Chapters from the book itself

An EPUB's table of contents, Word's headings, Markdown headings, or lines like "Chapter 3" and "Prologue". A long document with no chapters is cut into parts of about half an hour.

Scanned PDFs

Pages that are only pictures are read with text recognition on your computer, so old scans become audio too.

Pause, resume, restart

Progress is saved every few seconds. If the app closes, updates or the computer restarts, the book carries on where it stopped.

Your own voice

Record twenty seconds and hear a whole book read as you. Or give each book its own narrator.

English, Spanish, German

Detected for each piece of text, so a book that mixes them is read correctly in the same voice.

Listening comes first

While you read something aloud, the audiobook waits, then carries on by itself.

How long it takes

Usually faster than listening.

With a graphics card from the last few years, or a Mac with Apple silicon, a book is usually made faster than it takes to listen to it. The computer stays awake while it works (the screen can still turn off).

Without a graphics card it still works, much more slowly: start it before bed and let it run. Keep a laptop plugged in, because on battery the graphics card is throttled.

VoicedByMe reads DRM-free books. Books locked to a store's own reader, like Kindle or Apple Books, can't be opened by any converter, this one included.

Questions

Which files can it turn into audiobooks?

EPUB, PDF (including scanned pages), Word (.docx and .doc), Markdown and plain text. The book has to be DRM-free.

Do I get chapters?

Yes. Chapters come from the book's table of contents or headings. Choose one M4B file with chapters, which Apple Books and audiobook apps show, or one M4A file per chapter, with titles and track numbers, which plays anywhere.

How long does a book take?

With a recent graphics card or a Mac with Apple silicon, usually less time than listening to it. It works in the background, one book at a time, and carries on after a restart.

Can the audiobook be in my own voice?

Yes. Record a short passage for about twenty seconds and VoicedByMe clones your voice on your computer. Then pick it as the narrator.

Can I publish the audiobooks I make?

The ready-made voices can be used for anything lawful, including commercial work. You need the rights to the book you publish, and to label the audio as AI-generated where the law asks.

How much does it cost?

$30 once for the first 50 customers, then $50. No subscription. The full app is free for one day so you can try it first. A license is for one computer.
